Reggae/dancehall artiest Eek A Mouse is weer in ons land! Als je hem afgelopen zomer gemist hebt, moet je nu zeker gaan. De Jamaicaanse zanger Ripton Joseph Hylton kwam op de naam Eek, omdat het de naam was van een paard waar hij altijd op wedde.
Hij heeft veel geld aan het wedden verspilt en net toen hij niet meer had ingezet, won het paard. Eek heeft een aparte manier van zingen, wat hem anders maakt dan de andere reggae artiesten. Vaak gebruikt hij zijn aparte stem ook als instrument. Eek zegt op zijn website: "Sometimes, if I’m freestyling lyrics … I’m thinking about the sound. I say, ‘bam-ding-ding’ and stuff like that to get the lyrics together." Hij toert de hele wereld af om concerten te geven en doet dit met veel humor. Lees verder om een clip van hem te bekijken.
Biografie
Ripton Joseph Hylton is geboren op 19 november 1957 in Kinston Town, Jamaica. Hij begon met muziek opnemen in 1980. Het lied Wa Do Dem, dat over zijn voorval met het paard gaat werd zijn eerste hit in Jamaica. In 1982 scoorde hij nog meer hits en werd een hoogtepunt op het Reggae Sunsplash Festival ’81. In de jaren’90 ging Eek-A-Mouse gestaag verder met hitjes maken en cd’s uitbrengen. Zelf heb ik de cd Eeksperience uit 2001. Deze cd is erg gevarieerd en heeft me fan gemaakt van The Mouse, zoals hij zichzelf vaak noemt.
